Quick Guide to Teaching and Learning at Running Deer

Each student will have their own timetable, written to meet them where they are. The timetable will have all the subjects and learning they need packaged in a way that suits them.

All students will have Maths, Science, English and Art delivered by a subject specialist teacher. They will also have this support across the week to support the learning outside of the classroom.

Alongside this there is the Running Deer Emotional Curriculum which is designed to support students identify and manage emotions, and what to do when they have big feelings they can’t control.

Project based learning covers everything else! As the saying goes “there’s a project in that” at the mention of anything interesting. This work is designed to cover all other aspects of the curriculum, providing broad and balanced learning for all.

Lessons will look different for everyone.

We have 3 mains ways of teaching, Taught, Adult Led, Learner Led.

Every learning interaction is linked back to student targets and is recorded using an online system. This is then checked to make sure the lessons are right for students and students are ready for the lessons.

Whenever we decide on a new learning experience, we ask ourselves 4 key questions.

  • What do we want to do - formal learning or project-based learning?
  • How we want to do it - learning led or taught?
  • How will we record it - written work, photos etc?
  • How will we know it’s worked?

This last question then informs the first question - what do we want to do? This is true of all activities we deliver for any element our offer.

Sometimes it might not look clear what and why people are doing something, if that’s the case please just ask them!
